Genetic ablation, called also genetic amputation or cell ablation or tissue ablation, is a technique that can be used to suppress selectively the growth of a certain predetermined cell population in a living organism. The term genetic ablation is used, however, also for genetic modifications disrupting the activity of an individual gene by gene targeting (see: knock-out), for example in ES cells or mice derived thereof.
