Gerbich blood group antigen

[Gerbich blood group antigens]

abbr. Ge. This blood group antigen is located on glycophorin C. It is due to a deletion of the 84 bp exon 3 of the glycophorin C gene (Chang et al, 1991; for overview see also: Walker and Reid, 2010).

Maier et al (2003) have shown that glycophorin C mediates a principal Plasmodium falciparum invasion pathway into human erythrocytes. The parasite cannot invade cells lacking the Gerbich blood group antigen. Absence of Gerbich blood group antigen in certain Melanesian populations has arisen through natural selection by severe malaria.
