abbr. GRP (a term with multiple meanings). This secreted protein of 10.2 kDa (74 amino acids) has been isolated by Viegas et al (2008) as a vitamin K-dependent protein from the calcified cartilage of Adriatic sturgeon (Acipenser nacarii). The protein contains 16 gamma-carboxyglutamic acid (Gla) residues. Gla-rich protein has orthologs in all taxonomic groups of vertebrates. GRP1 [Gla-rich protein 1] and GRP2 [Gla-rich protein 2] are designations for the two paralogs identified in the teleost fish genome (Viegas et al, 2008). The protein has been identified independently as UCMA [Unique cartilage matrix-associated protein].
