Gliotactin

Gliotactin is a transmembrane protein identified originally in Drosophila melanogaster (Gene: CG3903). Gliotactin is expressed transiently on peripheral glial cells and is required for the formation of the peripheral blood-nerve barrier. In gliotactin mutant embryos, peripheral glial cells develop normally in many respects, but do not form a complete blood-nerve barrier. Peripheral motor axons are, therefore, exposed to the high K+ hemolymph. As a consequence, action potentials fail to propagate and the embryos are nearly paralyzed (Auld et al, 1995).

In the fly, Gliotactin is found in tricellular junction, which are formed at the corners of epithelial cells by the convergence of three septate junctions that are analogous to tight junctions in vertebrates ... ... ... ... ... Subscribe to continue reading! ... ...
