Glypican-2 (gene symbol GPC2) is a cell surface heparan sulfate proteoglycan with a core protein that is anchored to the cytoplasmic membrane via a glycosyl phosphatidylinositol. It is a member of a larger family of glypicans. Glypican has been identified originally as Cerebroglycan, so named because of its unique expression in the developing nervous system and expression specifically during neuronal differentiation. Expression is observed widely and transiently in immature neurons and disappears after cell migration and axon outgrowth have been completed (Stipp et al, 1994; Ivins et al, 1997).
