approved gene symbol: GPC5. Glypican-5 is one member of the family of heparan sulfate proteoglycans known as glypicans. The human gene, which is expressed primarily in adult brain has been identified by Veugelers et al (1997). Glypican-5 is most related to glypican-3 (Saunders et al, 1997). Saunders et al (1997) have reported that the expression of glypican-5 is developmentally regulated in kidney, limb, and brain in patterns consistent with a role in the control of cell growth or differentiation.
Glypican-5 has been shown to stimulate the proliferation of rhabdomyosarcoma cells. Williamson et al (2007) have reported that glypican-5 increases the proliferation of rhabdomyosarcoma cells through potentiating the action of the growth factors
