H-Sema-L is a member of the semaphorin gene family. Individual members of this family contribute to axon guidance by their repellent actions. The human gene has been identified by Lange et al (1998), which is related to the virus-encoded semaphorin AHV-Sema. Multiply spliced mRNAs are expressed in human placenta, spleen, thymus, and gonadal tissue.
The protein has been renamed SEMA7A (Semaphorin 7A) (Semaphorin Nomenclature Committee, 1999). The murine homolog is called SEMAI or M-Sema-L (Lange et al, 1999). See: Semaphorins for overview entry.
