a cDNA of this name has been isolated by Zhou et al (1992). The encoded protein (186 amino acids) is a cell surface glycoprotein expressed on dendritic cells predominantly in hematopoietic tissues (interfollicular interdigitating reticulum cells) and lymphocytes after cell activation but not by circulating leukocytes. The protein is expressed also in Langerhans cells within the skin.
In the nomenclature of CD antigens the encoded protein has been given the designation CD83 (Engel and Tedder, 1994).
