[heparin binding growth factor-1U] A deletion mutant of human HBGF-1 (= aFGF), lacking the sequence Asn-Tyr-Lys-Lys-Pro-Lys-Leu (Imamura et al, 1992).
The protein is capable of initiating cellular fos mRNA expression, one of the early responses observed after binding of HBGF-1 to its receptor. HBGF-1U also causes polypeptide phosphorylation on tyrosine residues of its receptor at concentrations that do not induce either DNA synthesis or cell proliferation. HBGF-1U functions as an antagonist of aFGF.
