[Histamine-producing cell stimulating factor] HCSF was observed initially in mixed lymphocyte cultures between donor and recipient of a mouse skin allograft (Dy et al, 1986). HCSF strongly induces the synthesis of histamines in murine hepatocytes and causes an increased production of histamine from target cells present in bone marrow.
HCSF activity was thought initially to be identical with IL3, which also possesses HCSF activity (Dy et al, 1987; Ihle et al, 1983). However, antibodies against IL3 do not inhibit the increase in histamine synthesis induced by HCSF while it strongly diminishes that induced by IL3. HCSF is identical with GM-CSF.
