[HGF activator] This protein is a 34 kDa serine protease similar to factor XIIa that processes the inactive single-chain precursor of HGF [hepatocyte growth factor]. Endoproteolytic activation results in the formation of biologically active heterodimeric form of HGF. HGF activator has been purified from bovine serum by Shimomura et al (1992).
The human enzyme, termed HGFAC [hepatocyte growth factor activator] (also the approved gene symbol) has been sequenced partially by Miyazawa et al (1993), who also cloned the cDNA and the gene from a human liver
