[HLA-DR associated invariant chain, HLA class 2 histocompatibility antigen gamma chain, MHC class 2 invariant chain]
The gene is being referred to as HLADG or DHLAG. In the nomenclature of CD antigens this protein has been given the designation CD74.
HLA-DR-gamma (called also HLA-DR associated invariant chain, HLA class 2 histocompatibility antigen gamma chain, MHC class 2 invariant chain, Ia-gamma). This protein associates with the alpha and beta chains of class 2 MHC molecules (Jones et al, 1979). This association takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum but the invariant dissociates from the complex before the class 2 molecule reaches the cell surface. Wraight et al (1990) have shown that this chain is expressed also on the cell surface.
