abbr. HA; abbr. also HHA [hydra head activator]; abbr. in non-English publications frequently HMP [Hydra Morphogen Peptide; also Hydra peptide morphogen].
Head activator is an undecapeptide (EPPGGSKVILF; Glu-Pro-Pro-Gly-Gly-Ser-Lys-Val-Ile-Leu-Phe) containing an N-terminal pyroglutamic acid (pEPPGGSKVILF); Schaller and Bodenmüller, 1981) isolated and characterised originally from the freshwater hydrozoan polyp Hydra (Hydra vulgaris, formerly Hydra attenuata). The sequence appears to be conserved from coelenterates to humans (Bodenmüller and Schaller, 1981).
