This term, which is still in use, has been coined by Vogel et al (1937) for populations of distinctive lymphoid cells with homogeneous, highly condensed chromatin and scant cytoplasm found in large numbers in the bone marrow of children with a variety of hematologic and non-hematologic disorders and in the absence of hematological malignancies (for overview see: Longacre et al, 1989; Sevilla et al, 2010; Chantepie et al, 2013).

These bone marrow cells have been referred to variously as marrow precursor cells (Smith, 1940; Brunning and McKenna, 1979), posttherapeutic stem cells (Stekhoven et al, 1986), lymphocytes (Miabe and Bloom, 1975; Borella et al, 1972), blasts (Woessner et al, 1985; Ibbott et al, 1960), ... ... ... ... ...
