abbr. HCV E2 protein; HCV glycoprotein E2] This glycoprotein is a virulence factor encoded in the genome of Hepatitis C virus. It is part of the viral envelope and also participates in immune evasion (see also: immunoevasins). E2 protein binds the human cell surface molecule CD81 with high affinity (Pileri et al, 1998).
Ligation of CD81 with E2 protein has been shown to costimulate T-cells.
