[HCV p7 protein]; also p7 viroporin.
This protein is encoded in the genome of Hepatitis C virus and plays a crucial role for assembly and release of infectious virus particles (Steinmann et al, 2007). The protein can oligomerize and acts as a viroporin, disrupting membrane functions by forming cation-selective ion channels (Griffin et al, 2003, 2004; Clarke et al, 2006; Pavlovic et al, 2003; Premkumar et al, 2004).
Madan et al (2008) have reported that Hepatitis C virus p7 protein: also induces cell death by apoptosis, which is associated with activation of caspase-3.
