[hypoxia-induced gene 95] Expression of this gene has been found to be induced in response to prolonged hypoxia, DNA damage, or oxidative stress, but not following hyperthermia or serum starvation. Overexpression of Hi95 is toxic for many types of cultured cells and causes cell death by apoptosis or sensitization to serum starvation and DNA damaging treatments (Budanov et al, 2002).
The protein is identical with SESN2 [Sestrin-2] (abbr. also: SEST2) a protein required for the regeneration of peroxiredoxins, enzymes that metabolize peroxides and are themselves rendered inactive by overoxidation in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (Budanov et al, 2004).
