[2´-(4-Ethoxyphenyl)-5-(4-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-2,5´-bi-1H-benzimidazole] also commercialised as Bis-Benzimide; abbr. sometimes Ho342, H33342, Hoechst H33342.
This compound binds AT pairs in the DNA and enters viable cells. Fixation is not required and so the cells can be recovered and grown afterwards. The rate of dye uptake is dependent on dye concentration and cell type.
