This cell type has been isolated from cell aggregates (oncospheres) in ascitis fluid of patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma using limiting dilution (Rafii et al, 2008). Hospicells are large cells with unique long, thin pseudopods forming a kind of net and an active cytoskeleton able to capture bound cells. These cells share some markers with bone marrow-derived or adipose tissue-derived human mesenchymal stem cells and have been shown to express CD9, CD10, CD29, CD166, CD146 and MHC1. They are negative for lineage-specific cell surface markers specific for epithelial cell lines,
