Hyastatin

Hyastatin is a 11.7 kDa Glycine-rich peptide (114 amino acids) from the hemocytes of the spider crab Hyas araneus. The hyastatin transcript is expressed constitutively and found mainly in hemocytes. Sperstad et al (2010) have reported expression of hyastatin by a variety of morphologically distinguishable types of hemocytes. Incubation of these cells with Gram-positive or Gram-negative bacteria does not appear to upregulate expression of hyastatin.

Hyastatin shows antimicrobial activity against yeasts, and Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. Both hyastatin and the N-terminal region have the ability to bind chitin (Sperstad et al, 2009).
