This variant of IL4 is an alternative splice variant of IL4 in which exon 2 sequences are lacking. The protein functions as a naturally occurring antagonist of IL4. This splice variant is found in humans, chimpanzees and cynomolgus macaque, rabbits, and woodchuck, but is absent from mice and rats (Gautherot et al, 2002). The splice variant interacts specifically with the alpha chain of IL4 receptor. It competes effectively with IL4 for the common binding sites and thus can act as a natural antagonist of IL4 (Vasiliev et al, 2003; Arinobu et al, 1999; Atamas et al, 1996).
