The NS1 gene encodes a non-structural protein that is expressed abundantly in infected cells. The NS1 protein has been shown to be involved in several processes during influenza virus replication. Functions include the control of viral RNA replication (Falcón et al, 2004) and the enhancement of viral mRNA translation (Aragón et al, 2000). Deletion of the NS1 gene results in viral attenuation (García-Sastre et al, 1998). The NS1 protein is involved also in the inhibition of host mRNA processing (Fortes et al, 1994; Lu et al, 1994; Qiu and Krug, 1994), and in the regulation of cell death by apoptosis (Schultz-Cherry et al, 2001; Zhirnov et al, 2002)
