This protein, encoded by the genome of influenza A virus, is the most abundant protein in influenza virus particles and surrounds the viral ribonucleoprotein complex (Nayak et al, 2004).
M1 matrix protein is involved in transcription inhibition (Baudin et al, 2001), nuclear import/export of ribonucleoproteins and the budding process (Nayak et al, 2004).
M1 matrix protein is expressed on the cell surface of infected cells and is recognized by cytotoxic T-cells (Reiss and Schulman, 1980).
