Intussusceptive microvascular growth pertains to vessel network formation by the formation and insertion of tissue folds and the insertion of transcapillary tissue pillars (connective tissue columns, referred to also as interstitial tissue structures, inter-vascular tissue structures, or tissue posts) into vessel lumens (Burri et al, 2004). Subsequent growth of these pillars eventually results in partitioning of the vessel lumen (Patan, 2000). This process is being referred to also as angiogenesis by longitudinal splitting or intraluminal splitting angiogenesis (Egginton et al, 1998).
