The name irisin has been given to the protein encoded by gene FNDC5 [fibronectin type 3 domain containing 5] (FNDC5 being the approved gene symbol) (Boström et al, 2012). The protein contains a fibronectin type 3 repeat. An alternative designation is FRCP2 [fibronectin repeat containing protein 2], a protein identified by Teufel et al (2002) that is expressed strongly in the heart.
Irisin has been classified as an adipomyokine as it is produced both by adipocytes and skeletal muscle cells.
