Junior blood group

abbr. JR blood group (ISBT 032). This blood group system shows high prevalence in all populations and consists of one antigen, Jr(a) antigen (Castilho and Reid, 2013). The Jr(a-) blood type, lacking expression of the Jr(a) antigen, is rare worldwide but many cases have been found in the Japanese population (Nakajima and Ito, 1978; Miyazaki et al, 1994) and in European Gypsy communities (Peyrard et al, 2008). It has been suggested that anti-Jr(a) may be responsible for acute hemolytic transfusion reactions (Kwon et al, 2004) and can cause fatal hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (Peyrard et al, 2008).
