[Kidney injury molecule 1] KIM-1 has been identified as a transmembrane protein of unknown function the expression of which is induced in dedifferentiated vimentin-positive epithelial cells in regenerating proximal tubules. The protein is detectable at low levels only in normal kidneys and its expression is upregulated following kidney injury (Ichimura et al, 1998). The presence of the cleaved ectodomain in urine is an indicator of renal damage (Van Timmeren et al, 2007).
Ichimura et al (2008) have reported a role of KIM-1 as a pattern recognition receptor. The ectodomain of KIM-1 specifically recognizes cell surface phosphatidylserine and oxidized lipoproteins expressed by apoptotic tubular epithelial cells. KIM-1 expressed by injured kidney epithelial cells
