This open reading frame is contained within the genome of KSHV [Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus]. It is known also as KSBCL2, vBCL2 (this designation also refers to similar genes from other viruses), KSHV BCL2 protein or HHV-8 BCL2 protein. KSHV orf16 encodes a homolog of BCL2, a protein that protects against cell death by apoptosis (Sarid et al, 1997). This protein is expressed in Kaposi's sarcoma lesions and in cell lines derived from primary effusion lymphomas and has been shown to suppress the apoptotic effects of BAX. vBCL2
