This open reading frame is contained within the genome of KSHV [Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus] KSHV) (HHV-8) [HHV-8 orfK15]. KSHV orfK15 is likely a distant evolutionary relative of Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein LMP2A, a receptor that mimics an activated B-cell receptor, showing comparable genomic location, splicing pattern, and protein structure and the presence of functional signal-transducing motifs in the cytoplasmic region (Sh2 and Sh3 motifs) (Choi et al, 2000). Steinbrück et al (2015) have reported that KSHV orfK15 can replace LMP2A and deliver functions similar to the endogenous B-cell receptor.
