Kenyon cells

This name refers to several genetically, anatomically, and functionally distinct subpopulations of neurons found in the so-called mushroom body, a higher-order center in the insect brain (Sjöholm et al, 2005; Menzel, 2014). The cells are also referred to as Mushroom body neurons.

In Drosophila melanogaster, approximately 2000 of such cells develop from four neuroblasts (Crittenden et al, 1998; Lee et al, 1999; Heisenberg, 2003; Tanaka et al, 2008; Krashes et al, 2007; Trannoy et al, 2011). There are about 2000 Kenyon cells in each mushroom body.
