Keratinocyte-derived autocrine factor
abbr. KAF (a term with multiple meanings). The known 20 aminoterminal amino acids of KAF are completely identical with amphiregulin and the factor is called also, therefore, Keratinocyte-derived amphiregulin. Antibodies directed against KAF also recognise amphiregulin.
KAF is produced by keratinocytes and mammary epithelial cells (Cook et al, 1991). It stimulates the growth of human keratinocytes (see also: autocrine) and some murine cell lines. Its mitogenic activity is inhibited by heparin and dextran sulfate (see also: HBGF,
