The Ko alloantigen is localized on the N-terminal region of platelet glycoprotein Ib (Glycocalicin, GPIb-alpha) (Kuijpers et al, 1992). In the nomenclature of CD antigens the proteins has been given the designation CD42b.
The presence of this alloantigen usually causes antibody formation in polytransfused patients but is only rarely implicated in neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (Kroll et al, 1994). Kuijpers et al (1992) have reported that the two alleles, termed KO(a) and KO(b) are result of a substitution of threonine-145 KO(b) (HPA-2a) to methionine-145 in KO(a) (HPA-2b).
