(German for “cripple”) Krüppel (frequently (mis)spelled Krueppel in English language publications) is a name given to a gene (gene symbol: Kr; gene: CG3340) identified in Drosophila melanogaster embryos. Its absence causes abnormal segmentation and death (Gloor, 1950); Krüppel is crucial for controlling embryogenesis (Schuh et al, 1986).
