These large star-shaped or pyramidal cells with a large oval nucleus and a small prominent nucleolus are called also stellate reticuloendothelial cells in older references. Kupffer cells are named after the German anatomist Karl Wilhelm von Kupffer (1829-1902). These cells are being referred to also as liver macrophages or hepatic macrophages. Together with other cells (endothelial cells, pit cells, fat-storing cells) they line the walls of liver sinusoids and are in close contact with the blood stream (Wisse et al, 1996).
