[large VEGF] a high mol weight intracellular isoform of VEGF generated by an alternative translation initiation process. L-VEGF isoforms contain an additional 180 amino acids due to translational initiation at a CUG codon situated in the 5′ untranslated domain of VEGF mRNA (Huez et al, 2001; Bornes et al, 2004; Meiron et al, 2001; Rosenbaum-Dekel et al, 2005). L-VEGF is 206 amino acids longer than the classical AUG-initiated form. L-VEGF is present in different mouse tissues. L-VEGF is cleaved into an intracellular 23 kDa aminoterminal fragment and a secreted fragment with an apparent size similar to that of the classical AUG-initiated form.
