This protein domain has been named after the three homeodomain proteins in which it was described originally: Lin-11 (Freyd et al, 1990), Isl-1 (Karlsson et al, 1990), and Mec-3 (Way and Chalfie, 1988). Proteins with a LIM domain have been implicated in a variety of biological processes, including cell lineage specification, cytoskeletal organization, and organ development (Bach, 2000; Dawid et al, 1998).
The LIM domain is a cysteine and histidine rich, zinc-coordinating domain composed of two zinc finger units as a tandem repeat with a 2-amino acid spacer. The domain consists of approximately 60 amino acids and has been identified in over 300 proteins from mammals, amphibians, flies, worms, and plants. Some proteins contain several such
