This blood group (name suggested by Tippett et al, 1986) was called originally called Luke blood group.
Whitehouse et al (1988) have reported that the locus is not closely linked to some other blood group antigens such as MNS, Rh, HLA, PI, Gm, and C6 and is genetically independent also of P1, K, XG, Au, Se, and C3.
The LKE antigen on red blood cells has been shown to be SSEA-4 [stage-specific embryonic antigen-4] (Tippett et al, 1986). It is a high-prevalence antigen (99 %), and the LKE negative phenotype is associated with high P(k) blood group antigen expression (Cooling and Kelly, 2001).
