[latent membrane protein 2A] LMP2A is encoded in the genome of EBV [Epstein-Barr virus latent membrane protein 2A]. It differs from a related protein, LMP2B, only in the first exon (Longnecker, 2000).
LMP2A is a hydrophobic membrane protein found on the plasma membrane and intracellular domains (Longnecker et al, 1991, 1993; Lynch et al, 2002). The protein plays a key role in regulating viral latency and EBV pathogenesis but is not essential for B-cell transformation (Longnecker et al, 1993; Longnecker, 2000).
