[LTC-ICs, LTCICs]
[long-term culture-initiating cells] Most, if not all, colony-forming cells, which give rise to colonies of mature progeny within one to three weeks in a colony formation assay, represent an intermediate stage of hematopoietic progenitor that rapidly disappears as they differentiate or die. LTC-ICs allow reconstitution of long-term multilineage Hematopoiesis in irradiated long-term BMC (bone marrow culture) when cultured on supportive feeder monolayers of fibroblasts and can be studied further by treatment with agents such as Fluorouracil or cyclophosphamide.
LTC-ICs are a distinct, rare primitive hematopoietic cell
