Lactate dehydrogenase

abbr. LDH. The enzyme catalogue designation is EC1.1.1.27. Lactate dehydrogenase is an enzyme known mainly for its role in metabolism. The enzyme catalyzes the reversible conversion of pyruvate to lactate and thus performs key functions in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis (Everse and Kaplan, 1973). A defect in the gene encoding the LDHA subunit of the enzyme has been implicated in glycogen storage disease (Maekawa et al, 1990).

The subunits of this tetrameric enzyme are either of two types designated H (for heart) and M (for skeletal muscle) and their combinations can give rise to different isozymes (Boyer et al, 1963).
