This peptide (Ile-Ile-Ala-Glu-Lys; IIAEK) has been identified by Nagaoka et al (2001) by virtue of its ability to lower cholesterol levels. The peptide has been identified as a fragment of bovine beta-lactoglobulin and corresponds to beta-lactoglobulin(71-75). The peptide shows greater hypocholesterolemic activity than beta-sitosterol, the drug commonly used to treat hypercholesterolemia.
Morikawa et al (2007) have shown that lactostatin can activate cholesterol-7-alpha-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) gene expression and also regulates the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and intracellular Ca2+ concentration.
