This virulence factor is encoded by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Goldberg and Ohman, 1987). It is the same as staphylolysin, the staphylolytic protease of P. aeruginosa (Kessler et al, 1993).
lasA protease is secreted in its unprocessed proenzyme form that is processed extracellularly by secreted bacterial proteases (Kessler et al, 1998). The lasA gene product has been shown to have elastase activity (Peters et al, 1992). Kessler et al (1997) have reported that lasA is a zinc metalloendopeptidase selective for Gly-Ala peptide bonds within Gly-Gly-Ala sequences in elastin.
lasA is involved Pseudomonas aeruginosa invasion of epithelial cells. Cowell et al (2003) have shown that mutation of lasA reduces invasion.
