This compound has been isolated from strains of Streptomyces griseolavendus (Onoda et al, 1989). Lavendustin A is 5-[(2,5-dihydroxybenzyl)(2-hydroxybenzyl)amino]-2-hydroxybenzoic acid (also: 5-Amino-[(N-2,5-dihydroxybenzyl)-N′-2-hydroxybenzyl]salicylic acid).
It is a highly specific inhibitor of tyrosine-specific protein kinases with almost no activity for serine- and threonine-specific protein kinases and is approximately 50 times more active than Erbstatin (Onoda et al, 1989, 1990; Hsu et al, 1991). Lavendustin A is not a competitive inhibitor of substrate binding. Instead it inhibits the binding of ATP to the kinases.
