This biochemically uncharacterized factor is found in the conditioned medium of unstimulated BALL-1 human B-cell leukemia cells. It significantly promotes the growth of 16/24 T-cell, B-cell and non-lymphoid leukemia/lymphoma cell lines and of 5/12 cases of fresh leukemia cells in serum-free medium.
The factor is distinct from EGF, TGF-alpha, both types of IGF, and insulin. The factor does not promote the proliferation of normal human fresh peripheral blood lymphocytes or mouse
