abbr. LMF (a term with multiple meanings). This factor of 24 kDa has been extracted from the cachexia inducing murine tumor MAC16 (McDevitt et al, 1995). MAC16 tumor-bearing animals contain in their serum antibodies that recognize a 24 kDa band on Western blots. Such antibodies are not present in the serum of mice transplanted with MAC13 cells, which do not induce cachexia.
Urine from patients with cancer cachexia also contain a lipid-mobilizing factor of 24 kDa, which is detected by antibodies in the serum from MAC16 tumor-bearing animals.
