This term has been introduced in court cases alleging malpractice, implying that histological examination of gynecologic smears missed atypical cells that would have indicated dysplasia or cancer. The term essentially refers to benign cells which may mimic dysplasia or cancer, and it has been pointed out that such benign cells can be correctly classified by experienced cytotechnologists and cytopathologists and recognized as benign (Frable, 1994, 1997; Sun and Grafton, 2002).
