abbr. MSH (a term with multiple meanings). This appears to be the Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) homolog of M17, a member of the IL6 subfamily identified in fish (Hwang et al, 2007). MSH is expressed highly in immune-related tissues and its expression is induced by immune stimulants, such as bacterial lipopolysaccharides, polyI: C, and peptidoglycan. The protein is probably involved in fish immunity particularly against viral and bacterial agents.
For other proteins/peptides with functions in innate immunity and/or antimicrobial activities see also: Innate immunity and defense peptides Dictionary.
