[MCMV M78; murine cytomegalovirus M78] This protein is encoded by an open reading frame in the genome of murine cytomegalovirus (Rawlinson et al, 1996). It is the counterpart of human CMV UL78 and rat CMV R78 (Beisser et al, 1999).
The M78 gene encodes a G-protein-coupled receptor with an unknown ligand. Olivera and Shenk (2001) have reported that the protein is a constituent of the virion and facilitates accumulation of immediate-early viral mRNA. Beisser et al (1999) have shown that deletion of the R78 gene from rat CMV produces a strain with attenuated replication, i.e., leading to considerably higher survival in infected rats, and the ability to cause syncytium
