MAC16 cell cancer cachectic factor

This factor is found in the transplanted murine adenocarcinoma MAC16 and is isolated also from MAC16 cells in vitro (Todorov et al, 1996). It is a 24 kDa proteoglycan with a protein moiety of approximately 20 amino acids (2 kDa).

The factor produces cachexia in vivo by inducing catabolism of skeletal muscle. Weight loss induced by this factor can be prevented by prior administration of a monoclonal antibody directed against this factor. The factor is present also in urine of cachectic cancer patients. The authors state that amino acids 1 to 14 of the murine and human factor are identical but do not report the sequence.

The factors described as Lipid-mobilizing factor or cancer cachectic factor are probably identical with MAC16 cell cancer cachectic factor.
