This antigenic determinant, identified originally by a monoclonal antibody on human the human CEM cell line, is associated significantly with a drug-sensitive phenotype, its expression being progressively reduced quantitatively in multi-drug-resistant variants (Cianfriglia et al, 1990). Cianfriglia et al (1992) have mapped the gene encoding the MC56 determinant and have reported that all information available suggests the identity of MC56 with the CD antigen CD44.
